Northwest Rotary Club of San Antonio partnered with West Avenue Elementary in their CHANGE program. (Change is an acronym which stands for Citizenship, Health, Attendance, Neatness, Grades and Enthusiasm.) We believe this program will assist in early development of character and leadership traits among West Avenue Elementary students.
West Ave Elementary is a 350 student ‘high risk’ school. Absenteeism sometimes runs as high as 30-35% with high neighborhood turnover.
On June 4, Mr. Saldana, West Avenue Elementary Principal, with the help of NW Rotary members, participated in an award ceremony to provide special recognition for those students who achieved ‘perfect attendance’ during a 9-week period. Any student who achieves ‘perfect attendance’ in any three of the four 9-week periods earns his/her choice of a soccer ball, football, or basketball. Two outstanding students from each class were awarded a bicycle. The sports balls and bicycles were purchased with a matching $1,000 Rotary 5840 District Grant and a Walmart donation. 14 bicycles and 39 sports balls were awarded.
Blue Bell Creameries provided the ice-cream for the Perfect Attendance parties.
NW Rotary Club also donated several new books to the school’s library, and $500 in cash to purchase additional books for the library. One Rotarian also participated in a ‘reading enrichment’ program for the students.
In partnership with the Antigua Rotary Club in Antigua, Guatemala, the Northwest Rotary provided a District 5940 Matching Grant of $5,000 for the 2017-18 year. This second grant provided funds for the purchase of three vacuum suction units, three metal cribs, three stretchers with wheels and a patient hydraulic lift for the Albergue Hermano Pedro (Shelter) residential facility for disabled children. The first Matching 5840 District Grant provided new dental equipment and dental supplies for the Shelter and Maria de Nazaret Nursery, in Rotary year 2016-17. According to Director, Blanca Trejo de Orozco, the Shelter needed additional basic supplies and equipment to better provide for the special needs children’s health and wellbeing. At the Shelter, 80 children with cerebral palsy have a permanent home with specialized nursing and dental care; as well as physiotherapy care, individualized meals, bedrooms and special bathrooms.
At the Maria de Nazaret Nursery, located adjacent to the Shelter, 80 children of the staff of the Shelter and limited number of families of San Gaspar Vivar which is a small community located south of Antigua, Guatemala, receive pre-primary education, three daily meals plus medical and dental treatment. The Shelter and the Nursery personnel consists of 73 employees, including a full-time physician, three physical therapists, part time dentists and three teachers for the Nursery. Both the Shelter and Nursery are supported by private donations.
